He sighs softly, trying not to sound too disheartened. It's not like he wasn't aware of that aspect of their relationship. And he feels pretty confident that they'll always have the best friend thing going for them, regardless of anything else between them. Most couples don't get that certainty.
So why does it sting so much to hear it spelled out?
