The older man would never admit it, but in a way Murdock's illness frightens him - he's used to living life with his team sitting on a powder keg, but the pilot is a special case. He's not unhinged... though at times he can be... he just processes things differently than the rest of them. It's one of the many reasons he's a valuable asset - and the reason he doesn't look at him with pity or fear when he sits on the opposite side of the bed and stretches his legs out.
